<p>While this can happen to the best of us, it doesn&#8217;t mean you should drop the ball altogether when it comes to staying fit. What people need to realize is that staying active and eating right are critical for long-term health and wellness &#8212; and that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The more you know about how your body responds to your lifestyle choices, the better you can customize a nutrition and exercise plan that is right for you. When you eat well, increase your level of physical activity, and exercise at the proper intensity, you are informing your body that you want to burn a substantial amount of fuel. This translates to burning fat more efficiently for energy.<br />
In other words, proper eating habits plus exercise equals fast metabolism, which, in turn gives you more energy throughout the day and allows you to do more physical work with less effort.</p>
<p>The true purpose of exercise is to send a repetitive message to the body asking for improvement in metabolism, strength, aerobic capacity and overall fitness and health. Each time you exercise, your body responds by upgrading its capabilities to burn fat throughout the day and night, Exercise doesn&#8217;t have to be intense to work for you, but it does need to be consistent.</p>
<p>I recommend engaging in regular cardiovascular exercise four times per week for 20 to 30 minutes per session, and resistance training four times per week for 20 to 25 minutes per session. This balanced approach provides a one-two punch, incorporating aerobic exercise to burn fat and deliver more oxygen, and resistance training to increase lean body mass and burn more calories around the block.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a sample exercise program that may work for you:</p>
<p>* Warm Up &#8212; seven to eight minutes of light aerobic activity intended to increase blood flow and lubricate and warm-up your tendons and joints.</p>
<p>* Resistance Training &#8212; Train all major muscle groups. One to two sets of each exercise. Rest 45 seconds between sets.</p>
<p>* Aerobic Exercise &#8212; Pick two favorite activities, they could be jogging, rowing, biking or cross-country skiing, whatever fits your lifestyle. Perform 12 to 15 minutes of the first activity and continue with 10 minutes of the second activity. Cool down during the last five minutes.</p>
<p>* Stretching &#8212; Wrap up your exercise session by stretching, breathing deeply, relaxing and meditating.</p>

Depending on your initial fitness level, you should expect the following changes early on.</p>
<p>* From one to eight weeks &#8212; Feel better and have more energy.</p>
<p>* From two to six months &#8212; Lose size and inches while becoming leaner. Clothes begin to fit more loosely. You are gaining muscle and losing fat.</p>
<p>* After six months &#8212; Start losing weight quite rapidly.</p>
<p>Once you make the commitment to exercise several times a week, don&#8217;t stop there. You should also change your diet and/or eating habits,&#8217; says Zwiefel. Counting calories or calculating grams and percentages for certain nutrients is impractical. Instead, I suggest these easy-to-follow guidelines:</p>
<p>* Eat several small meals (optimally four) and a couple of small snacks throughout the day<br />
* Make sure every meal is balanced &#8212; incorporate palm-sized proteins like lean meats, fish, egg whites and dairy products, fist-sized portions of complex carbohydrates like whole-wheat bread and pasta, wild rice, multigrain cereal and potatoes, and fist-sized portions of vegetable and fruits<br />
* Limit your fat intake to only what&#8217;s necessary for adequate flavor<br />
* Drink at least eight 8-oz. glasses of water throughout the day<br />
* I also recommend that you take a multi-vitamin each day to ensure you are getting all the vitamins and minerals your body needs.</p>
<p>I suppose that&#8217;s all I can think of for now. I should extend my thanks to a doctor friend of mine. Without him, I wouldn&#8217;t be able to write this article, or keep my sanity.</p>

<p>Many people have goals, dreams or ambitions but do not know how to go about achieving them. They may have thought about what would make up self improvement and their ideal life, but have no idea how to even begin to make the plans and take the actions required to make them a reality.</p>
<p>Some people have a vague idea on how to go about self improvement. These are the ones that believe that if only they had a better job, or had been given better opportunities, or met the love of their life, or whatever else, everything would be fine and they would be happy.</p>
<p>They feel that their happiness or lack of happiness is decided by external factors and their thoughts and actions are of little consequence.</p>
<p>Some believe that if only they had more money they could have whatever they want and be on their way to self improvement.</p>
<p>They may have spent little time thinking about what they actually want from life, and do not really believe there is anything they can do to create their fuzzy version of utopia anyway, apart from buying more lottery tickets.</p>
<p>Other people do not even know what they actually want from their lives and may even have little idea what would really makes them happy. They seem to just drift from day to day, week to week, month to month, and year to year, and do little more than just about get by.</p>
<p>They may have seemingly secure jobs and be earning enough to live relatively comfortable lives. They seem happy enough and have no great ambition to achieve anything more from their lives than they currently have.</p>
<p>Is self improvement important?</p>
<p>The reality is that throughout our lives we are all constantly growing and developing. Circumstances make us grow and develop, even if we do not make the conscious decision to do so.</p>
<p>Up to a certain age, we learn through formal education and we continue to learn through our experiences for the rest of our lives. We have to learn and grow to deal with everything that life throws at us. We all have to go through self improvement.</p>
<p>Modern life moves at a dramatically faster pace than at anytime in history. For anyone living in modern society there are more opportunities to do anything that you want to do with your life than ever before.</p>
<p>But there is also more competition than ever before, and ever changing technology means that there really are few, if any ‘jobs for life’ anymore. It is now normal not only to change jobs quite often throughout our working lives, but even to completely change careers and industries.</p>
<p>Because the workplace is so competitive, people who are ambitious and hungry for success know they need to learn new skills and knowledge to keep ahead of the pack. To attain this, self improvement is needed.</p>
<p>These are the people that will be most likely to keep their jobs, or progress within their chosen field, or that will be readily employable in different organizations or industries.</p>
<p>A commitment to self improvement and personal growth may well be the deciding factor in how anyone’s future will turn out.</p>

For a slightly higher price, you can enjoy beautifully made and presented little garnished sandwiches vs. egg salad slapped between two pieces of white bread, for example.</p>
<p>For those with a budget, this special treat can be just that – a once in a while treat. Almost always, however, springing for the better quality option, whether meat or fresh fruit or flowers, is well worth the investment in the way it makes you feel.</p>
<p>Often, you need less of a higher quality item, and the satisfaction level of consuming far outweighs the mediocre experience of consuming the, well, mediocre product. Consider, for example, buying a few exotic fruits to try rather than the usual bag of apples and a bunch of bananas.</p>

<p>There is a big difference between being cheap and being smart with your money so you can keep more of it. Savvy wealthy people know that even though they have plenty of money, it’s better off in their own pockets than someone else’s. Your money can’t make you more unless it’s still in your possession. There are many ways to live a lavish lifestyle without paying the retail asking prices for such decadence. People who care well for their money rarely pat retail; they know people who can help them out and get them a better price on things; they negotiate from a point of strength (they really mean it when they say ‘I will leave and buy this elsewhere), and they know where to shop. If there is something you want, do a little internet homework (or have your kids do it, since your time is valuable), and you will invariably find you can save hundreds or thousands of dollars for your trouble. This applies to first class travel, designer clothing and jewelry, home furnishings and just about everything that is available for purchase or hire. This way, you’ll keep more of your money for other fun purchases.</p>
<h3>Extras:</h3>
<p>Sometimes the most decadent things are not the most expensive. In fact, since we humans ‘create’ the idea of value by putting price tags on things, you can sometimes find overlooked bits of luxury that not everyone thinks to pay or charge a fortune for. Examples here include fresh flowers, delivered groceries, gourmet coffee, home spa products, satin sheets, decadent throw pillows or blankets, off-lease luxury cars, and ebay finds such as brand new designer items people have received as gifts and don’t want or need. Who hasn&#8217;t fantasized about being the one who hits the game-winning homer? Who hasn&#8217;t dreamed of being the homecoming queen? And how many times have we dreamed of being rich, or successful, or happy with our relationships?</p>
<p>Often, we dream big dreams and have great aspirations. Unfortunately, our dreams remain just that – dreams. And our aspirations easily collect dust in our attic.</p>
<p>This is a sad turn of events in our life. Instead of experiencing exciting adventures in self actualization, we get caught up in the humdrum of living from day-to-day just barely existing.</p>
<p>But you know what? Life could be so much better, if only we learned to aim higher.</p>
<p>The most common problem to setting goals is the word impossible. Most people get hung up thinking I can&#8217;t do this. It&#8217;s too hard. It&#8217;s too impossible. No one can do this.</p>
<p>However, if everyone thought that, there would be no inventions, no innovations, and no breakthroughs in human accomplishment.</p>
<p>Remember that scientists were baffled when they took a look at the humble bumblebee. Theoretically, they said, it was impossible for the bumblebee to fly. Unfortunately for the bumble, bee no one has told it so. So fly it does.</p>
<p>On the other hand, some people suffer from dreaming totally outrageous dreams and not acting on them. The result? Broken dreams, and tattered aspirations.</p>
<p>If you limit yourself with self-doubt, and self-limiting assumptions, you will never be able to break past what you deem impossible. If you reach too far out into the sky without working towards your goal, you will find yourself clinging on to the impossible dream.</p>
<p>Try this exercise. Take a piece of paper and write down some goals in your life. Under one header, list down things ‘you know you can do’. Under another header, write the things ‘you might be able to do.’ And under one more, list the things that that are ‘impossible for you to do.’</p>
<p>Now look at all the headers strive every day to accomplish the goals that are under things ‘you know you can do’. Check them when you are able to accomplish them. As you slowly are able to check all of your goals under that heading, try accomplishing the goals under the other header-the one that reads ‘you might be able to do.’</p>
<p>As of the items you wrote under things I could do are accomplished, you can move the goals that are under things that are ‘impossible for you to do’ to the list of things ‘you might be able to do.’</p>
<p>As you iterate through this process, you will find out that the goals you thought were impossible become easier to accomplish. And the impossible begin to seem possible after all.</p>

It is to aim high, and start working towards that goal little by little. However, it also is unwise to set a goal that is truly unrealistic.</p>
<p>Those who just dream towards a goal without working hard end up disappointed and disillusioned.</p>
<p>On the other hand, if you told someone a hundred years ago that it was possible for man to be on the moon, they would laugh at you. If you had told them that you could send mail from here to the other side of the world in a few seconds, they would say you were out of your mind. But, through sheer desire and perseverance, these impossible dreams are now realities.</p>
<p>Thomas Edison once said that genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Nothing could be truer. For one to accomplish his or her dreams, there has to be had work and discipline. But take note that that 1% has to be a think-big dream, and not some easily accomplished one.</p>
<p>Ask any gym rat and he or she will tell you that there can be no gains unless you are put out of your comfort zone. Remember the saying, “No pain, no gain”? That is as true as it can be.</p>
<p>So dream on, friend! Don’t get caught up with your perceived limitations. Think big and work hard to attain those dreams. As you step up the ladder of progress, you will just about find out that the impossible has just become a little bit more possible.</p>

<p>Whatever it is scientist are in the process of proving that internal change is the only thing that can give you health and happiness. Everything else is an illusion.</p>
<p>What does this mean?</p>
<p>Your brain is the only thing that can keep you healthy and happy.</p>
<p>Richard Davidson, a neuroscientist at the University of Wisconsin and Jon Kabat-Zinn from the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre have just completed some interesting research that can actually be of benefit to you and me and the way we run our lives.</p>
<p>They took a group of 41 stressed, but otherwise healthy, individuals working in a biotechnology firm in Wisconsin. 25 were taught meditation. In this case: mindfulness meditation. The group met for a 2.5 to 3 hour meditation class each week. After six weeks they all attended a seven hour meditation retreat. In addition each member was asked to meditate, at home, for one hour a day using a guided meditation tape.</p>
<p>The other 16 were held as a control group and did not receive meditation training until the study was completed.</p>
<p>At the end of the eight week programme, in November, they also gave all the participants a flu jab. And guess what. “The members of the meditation group had a significant increase in antibody titers” in other words they have less chance of catching flu.</p>
<p>The bottom line appears to be. If you want to have good health and overcome the day by day blues and maintain happiness learn to meditate. When you meditate you change the way your brain operates.</p>
<p>In addition, they found, the more you practice meditation the better your daily performance.</p>
<p>&#8221;What we found is that the long time practitioners showed brain activation<br />
on a scale we have never seen before. &#8216;Their mental practice is having<br />
an effect on the brain in the same way golf or tennis practice will enhance performance.&#8221; It demonstrates, that the brain is capable of being<br />
trained and physically modified in ways few people can imagine.<br />

<p>So give yourself the space each day to train your brain.  It works.</p>

<p>Five of the best self help options that I’ve used successfully to help soothe my own mind, body and spirit, are:</p>
<p>1.    Meditation techniques – a fabulous self help tool which greatly benefits overall health and wellbeing.  There are many techniques to choose from such as:</p>
<p>Visually guided meditations; Candle meditation; Breathing meditation; Crystal meditation; Writing meditation (alternating using dominant and non-dominant hand); Walking meditation;</p>
<p>Body scanning; and  A self healing meditation using either color; breathe work; aromatherapy; etc.</p>
<p>2.    Painting with water colors, pastels or oil paints – express your uniqueness through art.  This is a wonderful self help tool to employ for inner healing, letting go and for creating something new (a masterpiece for your lounge room wall).</p>
<p>3.    Vibrational essences.  Part of ancient wisdom, vibrational essences are used in healing to assist with the removal of emotional blocks and patterns, as well as resolving issues from past lives.</p>
<p>Essences are generally in liquid form and can also be used in creams, ointments and oils (I sometimes combine mine with an aromatherapy oil blend).</p>
<p>Vibrational substances are derived from light (sun, moon etc), healing energy (universal or spiritual energy, prana, Reiki etc), plants (flowers, stems, leaf etc), mineral (crystals, gold etc), environmental (sacred places), or animal.</p>
<p>Some examples of essences available (there are many) to explore further as a self help tool are:</p>
<p>Flower, Gem, Angel, Shell, Coral, Sea, Goddess, and Chakra essences</p>

<p>Find yourself a special journal/diary to write in; something special to write with (can be brightly colored inks or the more traditional black, blue or reds) and make a date with yourself to do some journal writing every morning at the same time (before rising out of bed).</p>
<p>I’ve practiced journal writing as a self help tool for many years and still find it, to this day, one of the greatest self help and self improvement tools around – and it costs nothing!</p>
<p>Write out your worries, sadness, loneliness, or whatever is playing on your mind.  When you’ve done that write in your journal the excitement, enthusiasm and passion you intend to experience for the day ahead, the projects you’re working on, friends you’ll catch up with, food you’ll eat, possible miracles that might happen, shopping to be done, your work day etc.</p>

<p>Aromatherapy massage – there’s nothing quite like this one using essential oils for body, mind and spirit.</p>
<p>Ka Huna, LomiLomi – gentle, relaxing, soothing and stretching massage (even watching this massage is relaxing);</p>
<p>Reflexology – therapeutic hand and foot massage;</p>
<p>Reiki – hands on energy healing (aligns Chakras etc)</p>
<p>Vichy Shower – warm water is directed over your body, gently massaging it (this is heavenly, especially after a salt scrub).</p>
<p>Acupressure – form of bodywork based on Chinese Meridian theory</p>
<p>Ayurvedic – part of a traditional detoxification and rejuvenation program of India called Panchakarma – vigorious massage with warm oils and herbs to remove toxins, is calming and balancing, and facilitates profound inner peace.</p>
<p>Hot stone massage – warm smooth stones are applied to the body and employed by the therapist’s hands.</p>
<p>A massage not listed that I experienced while ago was a form of Swedish massage.  I was given small smooth rocks to hold in either hand, at the end of the massage the therapist held my feet and ‘tuned’ me, which sounded like a clarinet going up and down the scales.  To say I felt relaxed and energised at the same time is an understatement.  It was amazing.</p>
<p>I’ve road tested many self help tools over the years; it’s been an amazing journey with the most profound assistance coming from spirit.  Sometimes good comes from being blinded by the light.</p>

<p>There are several factors that affect the metabolism of a person, such as the amount of muscle tissue, the frequency of the meals one consumes, genetics, stress levels, personal diet and activity levels. Metabolism slows done due to the following: loss of muscle because of not enough physical activity, the tendency of the body to cannibalize its own tissue because there is not enough food energy to sustain it, and the decrease of physical activity that comes naturally with old age.</p>
<p>Here are several ways to fire up one&#8217;s metabolism:</p>
<p>1. Build up on lean, mean body mass. It is only natural that metabolism decreases along with age, but it is possible to counter the effects. The amount of muscle a person has is a very strong determinant in the ability to burn calories and shed fat. So it goes without saying that exercise is essential. Build strength and resistance by working out at least twice a week, preferably with weights. Do easy exercises in between workouts. Simple tasks such as walking the dog and using the stairs in place of the elevator can already take off calories. The key is to match the amount of eating to the amount of activity one has. Here are some guidelines in getting the right exercise:</p>
<p>For strength training</p>
<p>-Increase the amount of repetitions of a particular exercise.<br />
-Add the level of resistance<br />
-Utilize advance exercise techniques if possible</p>
<p>For cardiovascular training</p>
<p>-Insert intervals between exercises<br />
-Perform cross-training and combine the exercises<br />
-Add up on resistance and speed</p>
<p>2. Eat breakfast. A lot of people are ignoring the fact that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Surprisingly, the ones who eat breakfast are thinner than the ones who do not. Metabolism can slow down considerably if breakfast is taken during mid-morning or if one waits until the afternoon to eat.</p>
<p>3. Avoid sugar. Sugar enables the body to store fat. It is recommended that a person consumes food that helps sustain an even level of blood-sugar. Additionally, progressive execerise 2-3 times a week should be in order to stabilize blood sugar.</p>
<p>4. Eat spicy foods. Hot cuisine with peppers can increase metabolism.</p>
<p>5. Sleep more. According to research, it is riskier for people who do not get enough sleep to gain weight. Also, muscles are regenerated during the last couple of hours of slumber.</p>
<p>6. Increase water intake. Water flushes out toxins that are produced whenever the body burns fat. Majority of bodily functions involves water, and lack of water causes the body system&#8217;s operations to decrease its speed, and produces unneeded stress as a result.</p>
<p>7. Eat smaller meals. It is advisable to consume 4 to 6 small meals that are timed 2 to 3 hours apart.</p>
<p>8. Never skip meals. People tend to skip meals in order to lose weight, which is a big mistake since it slows down metabolism.</p>
<p>9. Plan meals in detail. Always prepare the right amount of food to be consumed at the designated intervals. Do not commit the mistake of eating meals in sporadic patterns.</p>
<p>9. Ditch the stress! Stress, be it physical or emotional, triggers the release of a steroid called cortisol, which decreases metabolism. Also, people tend to eat excessively when stressed.</p>
<p>10. Guzzle up on green tea. It can be used as a substitute for coffee. Tea has the ability to stimulate metabolism, and unlike coffee, it has no undesirable side effects when too much is consumed.</p>
<p>11. Include more energy foods in the diet, such as fruits and vegetables, beans and whole grains.</p>
<p>Achieving the desired body weight is never impossible if one has the determination and patience needed to stabilize the metabolism level, which plays an important role in weight loss. A person needs to realize that eating right and working out is not just a passing fancy, but a way of life.</p>

<p>Why does aging contort so many bodies in this way? The reason is that many people, throughout their lives, never extend the neck to its full range, and so the muscles shorten. Long hours of reading, sewing, typing, or standing at a workbench take their toll. Eventually deposits of calcium salts in the joints complete the process of immobilization. Once this calcification takes place, nothing can be done to reverse it.</p>
<p>Fortunately, older persons can take action before it is too late. The best action is regular exercise that stretches the muscles and improves flexibility, with special considerations on the core muscles. <p>Core muscle exercises lengthen the muscles that have contracted as a result of pain. It also prevents pain from vigorous exercise if they are included at the end of each workout.</p>
<p>Health and fitness experts highly recommend starting core work out immediately and repeating the routine at least 2 times a week. The process can be done after the workout or even during the activity, for about 10 to 20 minutes only.</p>
